Why is it important for kids to see a dentist?

A dentist can ensure your children’s mouths stay healthy throughout their lives. The sooner you can bring them in, the healthier their mouths will be.

According to the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, every child should get a dental checkup by age 1, or as soon as their first tooth comes in.

Optimal oral health for your children starts with you. Get them started as soon as tooth buds pop up, and wash them nightly with a soft washcloth before they go to sleep.

Bring your children to Garden Oaks Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. The team knows how important it is for your child to feel safe and comfortable and works hard to provide a friendly atmosphere.

Come into Garden Oaks Family & Cosmetic Dentistry’s reception room, and they promise you won’t be waiting long.  They have a children’s area with books, toys, duplos, and mazes to keep them or siblings entertained.

Garden Oaks Family & Cosmetic Dentistry’s warm homestyle atmosphere and chairside manner help your child relax, creating an enjoyable experience that encourages good dental health as they grow.

They start slow and progress. The first time your child may just let the team look, and that's okay.  The team will let your child ride up and down in their magic chair and look at their teeth in the mirror. If your child will allow, the team squirts some water in their mouth and lets them suck it out with Mr. Thirsty. This is their Happy Visit. The team will also go over things with the parent so that they know what to do and what to watch out for. When your child is ready or if the team sees a problem during the quick look, they will begin with a more thorough cleaning. The next visit, they are usually ready to actually have their teeth cleaned.

When is it time to see an orthodontist or another specialist?

When your child has his or her regular exams, the hygienist will come get you or the caregiver that brought them and go over everything when the doctor comes in for the exam.

If the doctor sees that they need to see an orthodontist or any other specialist, they will let you know and give you several options for people to see.  They rarely need to send their pediatric children out for referrals as the Waterlase laser makes care for children much easier.

The team can help you make that appointment if you would like, or you may call on your own.  Your patient’s doctor will send a referral letter with what the specialist needs to check and any picture or X-rays so that additional x-rays are not needed again.

If you see a problem or have a concern, let Garden Oaks Family & Cosmetic Dentistry know when you call regarding your appointment.
