In the 21st century, cosmetic dentistry is safe and widely accessible. Indeed, it seems like a hallmark of modern innovation! However, it has actually been around for thousands of years! Yes, even ancient peoples were invested in the pursuit of a perfect smile. Would you like to learn more about the fascinating history of cosmetic dentistry? Continue reading below to get a glimpse into the background of dental beauty.
Ancient Cosmetic Dentistry
Evidence indicates that as early as 700 BCE, the ancient Etruscans attempted to restore missing teeth with some unusual materials. For example, they used things like ivory and bone. They sometimes even used teeth taken from deceased animals and humans.
Ancient Egyptians also showed a creative spirit in their cosmetic dentistry endeavors. They crafted crowns and bridges out of gold, and they sometimes replaced missing teeth with seashells that were hammered directly into the gums. They also had their own version of teeth whitening; they would use a mixture of pumice and vinegar to remove stains. This was effective but also very harmful to the tooth enamel.
In Rome, the people were also interested in whitening their teeth, but their method was somewhat unsettling. They used urine! Indeed, the ammonia inside the urine proved to be effective at breaking up unwanted coloration.
Medieval Cosmetic Dentistry
Dentistry as a profession did not really get its start until the 18th century. Before that, during the Middle Ages, dental services and cosmetic treatments were often performed by barbers. They often used acidic coatings and files to remove stains from teeth. As you can imagine, that could cause a lot of damage!
During this period, European societies revived some ancient practices. For example, they would use ivory and bone to create dentures. It was also common to transplant teeth from deceased individuals. Their efforts were largely unsuccessful and were a major health risk to patients.
Modern Advancements
Modern cosmetic dentistry was born in the 18th century. During this period, porcelain was first introduced as a material for dental restorations. As time marched on, acrylic and plastic materials were also incorporated into dentistry. Such materials were both aesthetically pleasing and durable.
In the 20th century, more exciting advancements took place. Veneers were invented in the 1930s, and by the 1980s, new bonding techniques made them a viable option for many people. Teeth whitening also took great strides forward as carbamide peroxide emerged as an effective and relatively safe bleaching agent.
In the 21st century, researchers and dentists are continuing to make great strides forward. Yes, aren’t you grateful that cosmetic dentistry is now both safe and effective? Talk to your dentist to find out what innovations and technologies they use to help patients achieve their ideal smiles.
