What Is SureSmile?

Clear aligner

SureSmile is an advanced clear aligner treatment system that combines 3D imaging technology, digital treatment planning, and precision manufacturing to deliver efficient and accurate tooth movement. Unlike traditional braces, SureSmile utilizes a series of customized, removable clear aligners tailored specifically to each patient’s unique dental anatomy and desired treatment outcomes. These aligners gently move the teeth over time into their healthier positions. The SureSmile system offers numerous benefits over conventional orthodontic treatment, including improved aesthetics, shorter treatment times, better comfort, and fewer appointments.

The SureSmile Clear Aligner Process

The SureSmile treatment process typically involves the following steps:

  • Initial Consultation and Records: During the initial appointment, we will conduct a comprehensive examination, and take digital impressions, X-rays, and photographs to capture the current state of the patient’s teeth and jaws.
  • Digital Treatment Planning: Using the digital records, Dr. Ruehle or Dr. Eide will create a detailed virtual treatment plan, outlining the precise movements required to achieve the desired final tooth positioning.
  • Custom Aligner Fabrication: The approved treatment plan is then sent to SureSmile’s manufacturing facility, where a series of customized clear aligners are produced using precise 3D printing technology.
  • Aligner Delivery and Wear: The patient will receive their first set of clear aligners and begin wearing them according to the doctor’s instructions, typically for 20 to 22 hours per day.
  • Periodic Appointments and Aligner Changes: The patient will attend regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress, receive new sets of aligners, and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.

Benefits of SureSmile

SureSmile continues to gain popularity as a clear alternative to traditional orthodontics because it doesn’t utilize sharp metal brackets. Instead, this treatment relies on a series of transparent plastic trays that fit snugly over your teeth to shift them. As a result, they provide many unique benefits over standard braces.

Non-Invasive Treatment

Patients with standard braces must make specific alterations to their daily routines and habits to avoid damaging the brittle brackets and wires. For instance, there’s a lengthy list of dietary restrictions that must be followed, or they could become bent or broken.

Meanwhile, the transparent trays of SureSmile are completely removable, making it easier to enjoy all your favorite meals.

Enhanced Comfort

The smooth material used to make these clear aligners is also considered more comfortable than traditional orthodontics. For example, they don’t cut the tender tissues inside your mouth because there are no sharp corners or clipped wires to contend with.

It’s normal to feel some aches when you first start wearing new trays, but this sensation is usually temporary and eventually fades on its own.

Improved Dental Hygiene

Patients with braces may be more likely to develop oral issues, such as cavities or gum disease, during treatment than those who choose SureSmile. But it can be difficult to brush and floss around standard orthodontics, and often requires special accessories, like floss threaders and interproximal brushes.

Thankfully, these clear aligners can be taken out, so you can maintain a twice-daily dental hygiene routine to safeguard your smile.

Transparent Trays

Crooked, overlapping, or gapped teeth can make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. Unfortunately, braces attached to your teeth might only make matters worse.

Those seeking a more discreet solution often choose SureSmile because the transparent trays are much less noticeable. They allow your natural enamel to show through, so you look and feel like your most attractive self.

Boosted Confidence

One of the first things people notice about you is the quality of your grin, and braces tend to draw unwanted attention. You might worry that you’ll be judged for your dental condition or orthodontics.

Clear aligners start to make changes in just a few weeks, and because they’re transparent, you’ll be showing off the results as you progress through your treatment. This can boost your confidence, allowing you to put your best foot forward in all your endeavors, such as job interviews, first dates, and other momentous occasions.

Faster Follow-Ups

You’ll be required to attend regular follow-up visits throughout this service, but these appointments tend to be briefer and are less involved than for traditional braces. You could potentially be in and out in as few as 15 to 30 minutes, which is often enough time for our team to examine your mouth to ensure you’re on track and provide the next trays in your series.

SureSmile VS Invisalign: Are There Any Differences?

If you are unsure whether SureSmile is any different than Invisalign, you may be surprised to learn there are some differences between these two similar clear aligner systems:

  • SureSmile may be less expensive for some patients than Invisalign.
  • Treatment with SureSmile can last between 6-18 months, while Invisalign typically lasts 12-18 months.
  • SureSmile aligners are thinner than Invisalign, which can make them more comfortable to wear.
  • SureSmile treatment can result in fewer office visits and adjustments, making it highly convenient.

Who Can SureSmile Help?

Good news: SureSmile is quite versatile. So, if you are struggling with overcrowding, an open bite, or another common orthodontic problem, don’t just assume that traditional braces are your only option! At your consultation, we can determine if you’re a good candidate for clear aligner treatment, but don’t hesitate to read on if you want to learn more about its uses.

Crowded Teeth

If there isn’t enough room in your mouth for your teeth to sit in their properly aligned positions, they will overlap. Unfortunately, this doesn’t just have a negative impact on your self-esteem; it has a negative impact on your oral health. The good news is that SureSmile clear aligners can correct mild to moderate cases (often in just 12-18 months, too!).

Gaps Between Teeth

Illustration of gapped teeth

Do you have a noticeable gap between your two front teeth? Maybe you have several smaller spaces throughout your mouth. In both cases, clear aligners may be an option! If we determine that you’re a good candidate, then we will use a custom series to gently close the spaces, giving you a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing smile in the process.

Overbite

Do your upper teeth jut out beyond your lower ones more than they should? If so, you might be asking yourself, “Does SureSmile fix overbites?” We’re happy to report that the answer is “yes!” So, don’t just assume that your only path to a straight smile involves metal brackets and wires. If you’re a good candidate for SureSmile, then your orthodontic treatment won’t involve any metal at all.

Underbite

Are you struggling with the opposite problem (your lower teeth sit in front of your upper ones)? If so, come to our office so we can explore your treatment options. If your case isn’t too severe, then clear aligners may be one of them! In that case, you won’t have to deal with noticeable braces, dietary restrictions, or monthly adjustment appointments.

Crossbite

Illustration of a crossbite

Crossbites often aren’t as talked about. However, that doesn’t make them any less serious. After all, when some of your upper teeth sit behind your lower ones, you can experience several issues, including trouble chewing properly and enunciating clearly. Fortunately, SureSmile is often a solution, especially for patients with mild to moderate cases.

Open Bite

Illustration of an open bite

When you bite down, is there a space between your upper and lower teeth that prevents them from meeting evenly? If so, you may have an open bite. Like the other bite problems on this list, several problems can arise if left untreated, including premature wear and tear. That’s why we recommend exploring your treatment options sooner rather than later.

SureSmile FAQs

Does SureSmile Hurt?

This is one of the most asked questions about SureSmile in Denton. So, if it’s been circulating on your mind as well, you’re not alone. The good news is that clear aligners are crafted from smooth plastic, there aren’t any metal components, and they are custom-made to fit the contours of your teeth perfectly. As a result, they are considerably more comfortable. In fact, outside of the occasional pressure from the movement of your teeth, your teeth-straightening journey should be smooth sailing!

How Long Does SureSmile Take?

That depends largely on the severity of your misalignment. However, the average treatment timeline is shorter than traditional braces (around 12-18 months). So, if you don’t want to commit 2+ years to braces, then you should consider SureSmile! During your consultation, we can determine if you’re a good candidate and, if you are, provide you with an estimate of the length of your treatment plan.

What Should I Do If I Accidentally Lose One of My Clear Aligners?

If you accidentally misplace one of your clear aligners in Denton, do your best not to panic. Instead, try to pinpoint the last place you had them. Then, retrace your steps. Since the trays are clear, it’s important to be very thorough in the process. It’s also a good idea to look in the not-so-obvious places, like your laundry basket or the center console of your car.

If you’ve looked and looked, but you cannot find your aligners anywhere, then give us a call. That way, we can determine if you can move on to the next set in the series. If that’s not an option, then we will ask you to wear the previous set while we have a replacement made.

Are There Any Dietary Restrictions with SureSmile?

Technically, SureSmile doesn’t come with any dietary restrictions. However, we do recommend limiting your intake of sugary treats, starchy snacks, and crunchy foods since doing so can lead to dental damage. Instead, fill your plate with lots of nutrient-dense, smile-friendly foods that will help keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your orthodontic treatment.

How Should I Clean My SureSmile Clear Aligners?

Let’s start with what you should NOT do: do not use toothpaste to clean your aligners or soak them in mouthwash or bleach. Instead, rinse them with clean, cool water when you take them off. Then, before you put them back on, use a damp, soft-bristle toothbrush and clear, mild dishwashing soap to gently remove saliva, plaque, and other debris from the surface. If needed, you can soak them for 15 minutes or so each day in a dentist-approved cleaning solution as well.

What Happens After SureSmile?

Once you’ve progressed through your series of clear aligners and are happy with the results, we will shift our focus to maintaining your results. First, we will take impressions of your teeth so a custom retainer can be made. Then, we will give it to you, provide instructions on how often to wear it, and discuss how to take care of it so it lasts.
